Your freshly baked copy of QGIS is downloading. QGIS is free of charge, and will always be free of charge if downloaded from QGIS.org. If you can afford to support the project and people making this software, please consider making a small donation to support our efforts. Whether you choose to donate or not, we hope that you enjoy using our labour of love and encourage you to share and spread your downloaded copy far and wide so that others may enjoy it too. Our very best regards!
The OSGeo4W installer is recommended for regular users or organization deployments. It allows to have several QGIS versions in one place, and to keep each component up-to-date individually without having to download the whole package. Since QGIS 3.20 we only ship 64-bit Windows executables.

One of the best user friendly options out there for Mac users who want to run GIS software natively is QGIS. QGIS is an open source GIS software package that can be freely downloaded. Anita Graser provides an overview to the QGIS ecosystem which includes a desktop GIS component, cloud hosting, and mobile application. QGIS offers compatibility for a variety of GIS vector and raster file types (such as shape files, KMLs, and GeoTIFFs) so it works well for those that need to migrate back and forth between other GIS and mapping platforms. More information about QGIS is available in the article Getting Started with QGIS.
To install QGIS on a Mac, the first thing you need to do is visit the QGIS download page. The download page provides access to the required installers and the QGIS download link for a variety of operating systems: Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD, and Android.
Next, find the downloaded .dmg file and double click to start the installation process. A folder will open and you should see four packages that each start with a number. This tells you the order in which to install the packages:
If you have hundreds of imported QGIS styles and want to clear out the imported styles without having to delete them one by one from within QGIS, you can clear out the settings from the hidden folder for QGIS found in the home direction. Access this folder in Finder by clicking the Go menu and choosing Go to Folder. Then type in /.qgis and click Go (backing up any files within this folder before deleting or changing them is strongly recommended).
Freeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use).
This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.
This software is no longer available for the download. This could be due to the program being discontinued, having a security issue or for other reasons.
QGIS is unique among the major desktop GIS software applications in that it can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. For this reason, it is important to select the QGIS version appropriate for your operating system on the Download page. You will also notice that, even once you have selected your operating system you may still see up to 4 options to choose from: for Windows you can select a 32 bit or 64 bit version of QGIS and for both Windows and Mac you can select the latest release of the software or an older, more stable long-term support release. The 64bit version is recommended for almost all users, unless you are attempting to install the software on a extremely old computer that has a 32 bit processor. It is also recommended that you install the latest release rather than the long term release so that you have access to the latest QGIS features. If you are working on a Windows PC or Mac, click on the QGIS standalone installer link for the software version that is most appropriate for your computer configuration to download the QGIS installation files. If you hoping to load QGIS on a Linux computer, follow the instructions on the Download page to download and install the software on you computer using the software installation method specific to your Linux distribution.
If you need to build QGIS from source, please refer to the installationinstructions. They are distributed with the QGIS source code in a filecalled INSTALL. You can also find them online at ://raw.github.com/qgis/QGIS/master/doc/INSTALL.html
QGIS allows you to define a --configpath option that overrides the default path for user configuration (e.g., /.qgis2 under Linux) and forcesQSettings to use this directory, too. This allows you to, for instance, carry aQGIS installation on a flash drive together with all plugins and settings. See section System Menu for additional information.
The Windows installer has an option to download the QGIS sample dataset. If checked, the data will be downloaded to your My Documents folder andplaced in a folder called GIS Database. You may use Windows Explorer tomove this folder to any convenient location. If you did not select the checkboxto install the sample dataset during the initial QGIS installation, you may do one of the following:
For GNU/Linux and Mac OS X, there are not yet dataset installationpackages available as rpm, deb or dmg. To use the sample dataset, download thefile qgis_sample_data as a ZIP archive from and unzip the archiveon your system.
Now that you have QGIS installed and a sample dataset available, we wouldlike to demonstrate a short and simple QGIS sample session. We will visualizea raster and a vector layer. We will use the landcover raster layer,qgis_sample_data/raster/landcover.img, and the lakes vectorlayer, qgis_sample_data/gml/lakes.gml.
This option is similar to the one above, but furthermore overrides the defaultpath for user configuration (/.qgis2) and forces QSettings to usethis directory, too. This allows users to, for instance, carry a QGIS installation on aflash drive together with all plugins and settings.
In this lesson you will install QGIS software, download geospatial fileslike shapefiles and GeoTIFFs, and create a map out of a number of vectorand raster layers. Quantum or QGIS is an open source alternative to theindustry leader, ArcGIS from ESRI. QGIS is multiplatform, which means itruns on Windows, Macs, and Linux and it has many of the functions mostcommonly used by historians. ArcGIS is prohibitively expensive and onlyruns on Windows (though software can be purchased to allow it to run onMac). However, many universities have site licenses, meaning studentsand employees have access to free copies of the software (try contactingyour map librarian, computer services, or the geography department).QGIS is ideal for those without access to a free copy of Arc and it isalso a good option for learning basic GIS skills and deciding if youwant to install a copy of ArcGIS on your machine. Moreover, any work youdo in QGIS can be exported to ArcGIS at a later date if you decide toupgrade. The authors tend to use both and are happy to run QGIS on Macand Linux computers for basic tasks, but still return to ArcGIS for moreadvanced work. In many cases it is not lack of functions, but stabilityissues that bring us back to ArcGIS. For those who are learning Pythonwith the Programming Historian, you will be glad to know that both QGISand ArcGIS use Python as their main scripting language. 2ff7e9595c
